    Using Rotate PDF, step by step

    1. Drop the PDF with the sideways or upside-down pages onto the box above.
    2. Choose how far to turn: 90° clockwise, 180°, or 90° anticlockwise.
    3. Leave the page box empty to rotate everything, or list specific pages such as 2, 5-8.
    4. Press Rotate PDF and download. The rotation is saved into the file, not just into your view of it.

    Why so many PDFs arrive sideways

    Two causes account for almost all of it. The first is document feeders: a landscape page — a spreadsheet, a certificate, an engineering drawing — goes into a machine expecting portrait, and the scanner records exactly what it saw. The second is phones. A camera writes an orientation tag into the image rather than actually rotating the pixels, and when that image is placed into a PDF the tag is frequently ignored, so a photo that looked correct in your gallery appears on its side in the document.

    Neither is a mistake you can prevent reliably, which is why permanent rotation is worth doing as a routine step before sending anything. A reviewer who has to tilt their head, or worse, work out how to rotate their own reader, is a reviewer you have made a small enemy of.

    View rotation versus stored rotation

    This is the distinction that catches people out. Every PDF reader offers a rotate control, and it almost always affects the display only. Adobe Reader, Preview, Chrome's built-in viewer and most mobile apps all behave this way: rotate, read comfortably, close, and the setting evaporates. The file on disk was never modified, so anyone you send it to gets the original orientation.

    A PDF page carries a /Rotate property — a number that is part of the page itself and says how it should be presented. Setting that is what this tool does. Once written, the page is the right way up in every reader, in print, and in any system that processes the document automatically. It is a genuinely different operation from what the toolbar button does.

    Rotation costs nothing

    Because rotation is stored as a single number rather than as transformed image data, it is free in every sense. No pixels are recalculated, no text is re-laid-out, image resolution is untouched and the file size is unchanged to within a few bytes. You can rotate the same document repeatedly with no cumulative degradation whatsoever.

    That also means it is safe to experiment. If 90° clockwise turns out to be the wrong way, run the result through again with anticlockwise and you are back where you started, byte for byte.     Frequently asked questions

    My PDF reader has a rotate button. Why do I need this?

    Because that button rotates your view, not the document. Close the file and the rotation is gone; send it to someone else and they see the original orientation. This tool writes the rotation into each page's own properties, so every reader, printer and reviewer sees it the right way up permanently.

    Which direction is 90 degrees?

    90° clockwise turns the top of the page to the right — use it when your page is lying on its left side. 90° anticlockwise does the opposite. If you pick the wrong one, run the file through again with the other option; two wrongs genuinely do make a right here.

    Can I rotate only some pages?

    Yes. Leave the page field empty to rotate the whole document, or list the ones that need it: 3, 2, 6, or 4-11. This is the normal case for scans, where only the landscape pages went in sideways.

    Does rotating reduce quality or change the file size?

    Neither. Rotation is a single number stored per page. No pixels are moved, nothing is re-encoded, and the file size stays essentially identical.
